Are your Employment Policies and Practices in Need of Repair?

claim-your-employee-rightsAs a small business employer, it is overwhelming to keep on top of California’s constantly-evolving and complicated employment laws.  But it is a must in the litigious environment in which we operate our businesses.

A recent study revealed that businesses in the U.S. have greater than 1 in 10 chance of having an employment practices charge filed against them. Employers based in California have a 42% higher chance of facing an employment charge than the national average.  Do everything in your power to not become one of these statistics – starting with becoming educated on the following employment law topics at the May 11, 2016 meeting:

  • The Basics on Wage and Hour Law (minimum wage, overtime, meal and rest breaks, timekeeping requirements, exempt v. nonexempt)
  • Legality of Flat Rate Pay
  • California’s New Paid Sick Leave Law
  • Recent Employment Lawsuits against Auto Repair Shops

Shivani SutariaShivani Sutaria, Esq., the principal at Shivani Sutaria Law Offices, is an experienced employment law attorney with an extensive litigation-background.  In her practice, she works with employers to develop proactive strategies that will mitigate their employment law risks.  Her services include: Providing advice and counsel on employment issues that arise in the workplace; Conducting trainings for management and employees; Performing audits of clients’ employment practices and policies to ensure compliance with current laws and utilization of best practices;  Developing policies, contracts and Handbooks that protect the interests of the employer; and Representation of employers in pre-litigation employment disputes such as administrative complaints on harassment, discrimination, wage and hour issues, and unemployment insurance.

Practical Tips On How To Move Forward In Your Business Instead Of Losing Ground, AND Get Support From Your Team

hello-im-change

Why do some people grow and change and others do not? In a recent article, Fast Company shares what they’ve observed as a leadership pattern that sabotages change. It occurs when senior leaders, who have been thinking, exploring, and debating about a particular change for a while, finally announce plans for a new initiative. Forgetting that others in the organization haven’t been a part of the discussions and are not as familiar with all of the reasons for the change, leaders are surprised by the amount of resistance the new change generates.

Are you considering a serious change effort in your organization? Do you plan to address the concerns of your employees, so you can get everyone on board and moving in the right direction? You’ve probably heard this before, but it’s worth repeating here: People who help to plan the battle rarely battle the plan. While dealing with people’s concerns about change may seem like a lot of hand-holding, it’s important for leaders to remember that they, too, had to process information and personal concerns before they were ready to discuss impact and implementation. If leaders can diagnose people’s stages of concern about a change and respond with the right information at the right time, they can dramatically improve everyone’s trust and participation. This allows people to refocus their energy on what needs to change and what they can do to help make the change successful.

Don’t miss this informative session! You will take away new insights and practical tips on bringing change to your business, as well as how to get buy-in from your team.

Feb 10 | What’s Holding You Back?

What’s Holding You Back?
What are the reasons your business isn’t growing?

flatlineYou may have a great shop, outstanding customer service and a steady flow of customers, but if each year the numbers look the same, your business has stalled. This sort of predicament can only sustain a flat-line in growth for so long before it begins to die.

When this plateau occurs, a common knee-jerk reaction may be to get more aggressive with marketing or look for an infusion of capital to reinvest in your business. However, before you invest more in marketing or take on unnecessary debt, consider the fact that you may be too close to the situation to effectively determine how to move forward, even if you know what it is that is holding you back. We have the answer—Speed Mastermind Groups!

About Speed Mastermind Groups
There is synergy of energy, commitment, and excitement that participants bring to a Mastermind Group. The beauty of Mastermind Groups is that participants raise the bar by challenging each other to create and implement goals, brainstorm ideas, and support each other with total honesty, respect and compassion. Mastermind participants act as catalysts for growth, devil’s advocates and supportive colleagues.

The concept of the Mastermind Group was formally introduced by Napoleon Hill in the early 1900’s. In his timeless classic, “Think And Grow Rich” he wrote about the Mastermind principle as: “The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony. No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind.”

In our Speed Mastermind Groups, the agenda belongs to the group, and each person’s participation is key. You bring your issue to the table and your peers give you feedback, help you brainstorm new possibilities, and set up accountability structures that keep you focused and on track. In this community of supportive colleagues, we will brainstorm together to move our tablemates to new heights. You’ll gain tremendous insights, which can improve your business and personal life. Your Mastermind Group is like having a objective board of directors.

How it works: At the tables, you will have 5 uninterrupted minutes to share your situation, explain what you’ve already done, what has and has not worked, and what you’re hoping for as an end result. Your tablemates will then spend 5 minutes providing you with suggestions, best practices, tips, and other suggestions for how to move your situation forward. Tablemates will take notes for you so that you are able to listen and absorb the feedback. Don’t miss this session—who knows this industry better than other ASCCA members anyway?

Jan 13 | Working With You Is Killing Me

Let’s face it—it’s a tough industry

back-ache

And we contribute to the toughness.

You’ve heard it before: “You’re your own worst enemy.” Well, when it comes to the way we treat our bodies at work that cliché could not be more true.

And, we also are the worst enemy of our employees in many cases. Everyday behaviors contribute to our aches and pains—the chair is the wrong height for the service writer, technicians stand too long with no breaks, lighting in offices and the shops is too dim; the list goes on and on. Let’s face it: we work in a tough industry.

But there are things–little things–that have a huge impact. The study of ergonomics has changed drastically—it’s not just about chairs and keyboards any more.

Join us as we welcome Susan Hannah, Arranged For Comfort, to our January 13 meeting. Susan’s smart tips will take the long-term problems out of our everyday activities.

About the Presenter
susan-hannah-croppedFor close to 20 years, Susan Hannah, owner of Arranged4Comfort in San Carlos has been honing her skills in the art of fitting the computer work station to the individual. The ergonomic principals she will present apply to both office and home computer work. Beginning as a consultant to SOMA Ergonomics, she was amazed to discover that of course, one size chair does not fit all. Once she learned to fit chairs to people, she dove deeply into the industry to learn all she could about addressing the various products and solutions available to accomplish complete comfort for users from 4’6” to 6’7”. Arranged For Comfort also expanded into bay area ergonomic product dealerships and contract office furniture, working with clients throughout the bay area. Susan has worked with companies such as VISA, City & County of SF, Del Monte Foods, Nektar Therapeutics, Mike Clark Accounting, White Oak Orchids, Satmetrix and hundreds of other individuals and firms. All these experiences enable her to specify and provide a complete solution for you and your organization.
